California is taking a serious look at the water-energy-greenhouse gas relationship. Saving water saves energy, either in cooling towers on buildings or at thermal power plants, which use large amounts of water for cooling. Saving water used outdoors via pumping, treatment, and delivery is good; however, saving hot water used indoors is better still. In this class we will assist participants in calculating the magnitude of the water-energy-greenhouse gas connection for their facilities. Participants should bring to class basic information from their facilities on the amount of water used and waste water discharged. Additionally, bring information on energy use (kW, kWh and therms), ideally broken out into types of use.
This class is part of a four-course series focusing on sustainability in higher education facilities and applicable operations and maintenance ideas to green existing buildings which will help save energy, money and the environment. This series will be hosted and/or web- and video-cast to seven community college campuses across California. This class is offered as part of the CCC/IOU Partnering for Sustainability program. California Community Colleges, Southern California Edison, Southern California Gas Company, San Diego Gas & Electric, and Pacific Gas & Electric Company are joining in a effort to link college and utility educational opportunities in the area of energy efficiency and sustainable design and programs. A summary of these classes listing the sponsoring utilities is available at this link: http://www.cccutilitypartnership.com/2009%20courses.html
