Project Status Completed
This research project studied the energy efficiency and power quality characteristics of power supplies used in servers. The findings revealed ways in which power consumption could be reduced, and the load capability of the servers increased. Banks of servers (also known as “data centers” or “server farms”) are used in a number of applications, including corporate campuses, government offices and educational institutions, and usually run 24/7. Forecasts project server power supply sales, of all types, will more than double over the course of five years. This widespread use presents a great opportunity for reducing energy usage by improving the operating efficiencies identified by this assessment.
