Develop and demonstrate a hydronic mechanical ventilation cooling and heating technology (NightBreeze) for residential buildings. The system integrates an economiser with a variable-speed fan coil unit and is controlled by a predictive thermostat. This mechanical technology plus energy-efficient home construction optimized for the NightBreeze system were incorporated into two new CA homes that have demonstrated great energy savings. At a minimum, the approach has the potential to virtually eliminate the need for compressor cooling by new homes in California's transition climates.
