Increased Energy Efficiency of Refrig. & Air Conditioners Through Use of Advanced Power Electronics

Develop and test a power electronics/motor technology that permits operating lower-cost, more efficient, three-phase electric motors from single-phase power sources. The original project was to demonstrate the technology on refrigerators and heat pumps, but analysis showed air conditioning to have greater efficiency improvement opportunities, so an air conditioner and a heat pump were tested instead.
