The Department of Energy (DOE) developed the L Prize competition to spur lighting manufacturers to develop high quality, high-efficiency solid-state lighting products to replace the common light bulb. Announced at Lightfair 2008 in Las Vegas, Nevada, the competition calls for the development of technologies to replace two of the most commonly used and inefficient lamps: 60W incandescent lamps and PAR38 halogen lamps. Winners receive significant cash prizes, plus opportunities for federal purchasing agreements, utility programs, and other incentives.
