Description Class 4 focuses on mechanical approaches to ZNE, including a discussion of mechanical system types, design, sizing issues and opportunities for integrating and combining systems. Envelope performance is emphasized as a critical design factor. We discuss new technologies and how to assess their value for ZNE projects, and also review water heating and distribution. Finally, we discuss quality control and review steps necessary to assure a ZNE home’s performance. Accomplishing mechanical system performance levels necessary for a ZNE home is the acid test for an HVAC contractor. Virtually all HVAC contractors state that their systems perform well, but research shows an industry all over the map. With sizing and performance variations that range (according to recent CEC funded research): 

708% for air handler watt draw (from 0.13 to 0.92 fan watts per sq ft)
1,222% for heating system sizing (from 9 to 110 Btu’s per square foot)
869% for cooling system sizing (form 1,739 to 200 square feet per ton)
Audience Level Participants should have also attended the first three classes in PG&E’s ZNE Homes series. Class content is intermediate to advanced, and most suitable for those already familiar with the design and construction of single-family residential buildings.

Instructor(s) Bill Dakin
Bill Dakin, P.E., Senior Engineer, has served on the Davis Energy Group staff since 1993. As lead design engineer he directs all of DEG’s mechanical design projects. Bill has 17 years of experience in the energy field, including work in wind and solar energy, and fourteen years in the HVAC field. He is a skilled DOE-2 analyst and also leads the building energy analysis section, manages utility and government sponsored research and design projects, and provides critical design and analysis support for the Zero Energy Homes and DOE’s Building America projects. Bill is a LEED Accredited Professional. Bill received his B.S. in mechanical engineering from Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo and a B.S. in Resource Sciences from the University of California at Davis.

Rick Chitwood
Richard (Rick) Chitwood, founder of Chitwood Energy Management in Mount Shasta, California, is an expert in energy-efficient residential building construction, diagnostic testing, and performance evaluation. He has extensive hands-on experience working with builders to improve the energy efficiency of new homes and with homeowners and remodelers to improve the thermal comfort and energy performance of existing homes.

Rick is a leader in the building science-based house-as-a-system approach to green home energy design and retrofits. As lead trainer for the California Building Performance Contractors Association (CBPCA.org), he teaches residential building professionals how to achieve high-performance thermal boundaries and energy-efficient mechanical systems.

Rick has participated in research projects involving extensive field-testing and data collection on California homes, and he advised the California Energy Commission on development of Quality Insulation Installation criteria for the 2005 Building Energy Efficiency Standards. He is also the author of several articles, including the "New Construction Report Card" series in Home Energy Magazine.
