Tesla, SCE agree on major new battery deployment

Tesla CEO Elon Musk

This week Southern California Edison announced it was deploying 80 MWh of Tesla batteries at a utility substation near San Bernardino, California. With a targeted completion date by the end of this year, this will represent the "largest lithium-ion battery project in the world” with the capacity to power 2500 households for a full day, according to Tesla.  The batteries will support the utility’s demand response efforts by storing excess energy during off-peak hours and pumping that electricity back onto the grid during times of grid need, thereby helping eliminate the need to fire up natural gas “peaker” plants. This comes on the heels of other major battery storage projects across California that are cementing the state’s leadership position in utility-scale battery deployments.
