Increasing Heat Pump Water Heater Deployment

Project Number ET22SWE0056 Organization SWE (Statewide Electric ETP) End-use Water Heating/DHW/HPWH Sector Residential Project Year(s) 2022 - 2024
Project Results
The CalNEXT Increasing HPWH Deployment project, conducted in collaboration with TECH Clean California, sought to accelerate the adoption of 120-volt heat pump water heaters (HPWHs) among residential contractors by addressing key barriers such as installation complexity and performance concerns. The project engaged 400 contractors through distributor channels and direct outreach, with 51 contractors completing a two-stage process involving enrollment in TECH Clean California and manufacturer-specific training. Following the training, 67% of participants reported increased confidence in HPWH installations. While 25 units were successfully installed in low-income or disadvantaged communities—half of the initial goal—the project nonetheless made significant progress in introducing and familiarizing contractors with 120V HPWH technology. The contractors' firsthand experience with these units, combined with up to $1,000 in participation incentives, encouraged greater acceptance of the technology. Moreover, positive contractor feedback indicated growing trust in 120V HPWHs, highlighting the potential for broader future adoption.  The project demonstrated that contractor engagement and tailored training can effectively build confidence in 120V HPWH technology. To further enhance future programs, key recommendations include extending implementation timelines, leveraging partnerships with manufacturers and distributors, incorporating 120V HPWHs into income-eligible programs, and integrating comprehensive data collection and quality control measures to ensure program effectiveness and long-term success.
