Lab Test of a Commercially Available Multi-Function Heat Pump

Project Number ET26SWE0028 Organization SWE (Statewide Electric ETP) End-use Whole Building Sector Residential Project Year(s) N/A - 2027
Description
Residential Multi-Function Heat Pumps (“MFHP”) provide space cooling, space heating, and hot water heating using one (1) compressor, with potential for lower maximum power consumption to avoid retrofit electrical service upgrades. MFHP products have the potential to save energy and reduce electrification costs in residential single family and multi-family buildings in all California climate zones and beyond.  This project will lab test and develop performance curves for a commercially available variable speed air-to-air MFHP that can recover heat from space cooling to heat hot water. The equipment is commercially available in California with outdoor units, air handlers, and water tanks, made by one (1) original equipment manufacturer (“OEM”), reducing installation complexity and costs. The manufacturer of the commercially available MFHP will provide the equipment, as well as engage with UC Davis to ensure correct equipment installation and commissioning to estimate energy savings for new measure development.
